Sean Wilson insists he will never return to Coronation Street as a cast member after falling in love with his new career as a cheesemaker.

The actor, 57, appeared on the ITV soap from 1985 to 2005 but left due to a storyline which involved his character Martin Platt seducing an underage girl.

He briefly reprised his role in 2018 for a handful of episodes as part of the David Platt male rape storyline, but he now says he has no plans to ever return.

New path in life: Sean Wilson insists he will never return to Coronation Street as a cast member after falling in love with his new career as a cheesemaker

Sean says soap bosses insisted his character embark on the plot that would see Martin branded a ‘paedophile’ in 2005 even though it made him feel ‘deeply uncomfortable’.

He told: ‘I didn’t want to do it and suggested they could bring in another actor, but the producer was insistent.

‘It wasn’t for me, so I told them, “No, I will not be doing that storyline and I suggest that maybe you go and have a rethink.”

Looking back: The actor, 57, appeared on the ITV soap from 1985 to 2005, but left upon the conclusion of a storyline which saw his character Martin Platt seduce an underage girl

‘They came back a couple of weeks later and said, ‘No, we do feel that this storyline is going to go ahead.”

As a result, Sean told bosses he would be leaving the serial and departed in 2005.

Sean said it was then announced he’d been sacked, which he insists was not the case.

The screen star said his grandparents were keen for his interest in the arts to grow as a child and he was encouraged to go into acting by a teacher at school.

Moving on: Now, Sean has switched to one of his other loves in life for work – cooking – and works in food

And, while he insists ‘every day was great fun’ on the Corrie set, he said he sees no return on the cards after his character went to live in New Zealand after his 2018 return.

During his first stint on the soap, he appeared when the shows were in their heyday, with 26.7million people tuning in for each episode.

But now he has switched to one of his other loves in life for work now – cooking.

He embarked on a career in a ‘Michelin environment’, working 12 to 15 hour days, before becoming ‘interested in the science of the food’ after meeting a Lancashire cheesemaker, prompting him to make his change of career.

And Sean is delighted when he is stopped by his former Coronation Street fans today, when they ask him about cheese, saying: ‘They are curious to know about the world of cheese.’
